Jory Cohen, Managing Director
Jory Cohen is passionate about applying market-based solutions to societal challenges. In 2011, Jory lived in East Africa and developed a sustainable for-profit business model based on fair-market-value sales of honey that empowers poor, Tanzanian female entrepreneurs with the opportunity to provide additional streams of income to their respective families and to contribute to individual savings accounts. During that same time period, he developed the career of a Tanzanian musician and empowered him to literally transform his quality of life from absolute rags to relative riches. Jory currently works as a Strategy Consultant for Ceridian-Dayforce, a Human Capital Management software company. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario as the Valedictorian of the HBA 2010 Graduating Class at the Richard Ivey School of Business. Jory is also the co-author of an illustrated children’s book.
Syeda Zaki, Director of Finance
Syeda brings with her considerable experience in the impact investment sector. Prior to moving to Toronto, she gained valuable exposure in the sector as a portfolio consultant working for Acumen Fund’s Pakistan office where she conducted due diligence for potential investments in the health and education sectors. Her work took her new and exciting destinations within the country where she had the unique opportunity to witness impact investment in action through Acumen’s investments in microfinance. Having recently moved to Toronto from across the globe, Syeda has already gained a strong local footing in the sector as an assistant editor of SocialFinance.ca and continues to actively extend her network across various organizations within Toronto’s impact investment and social entrepreneurship ecosystem. Her prior work experience was predominantly in the financial sector as a research analyst in equity brokerage as well as an asset management company. Syeda holds a BSc. from Queen Mary, University of London in Economics, Finance and Management and is also a CFA level 2 candidate.
Michelle Arnold, Director of Marketing
Michelle is a recent graduate of the Master of Global Affairs program, housed out of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto. Her academic research primarily revolved around gender and development, honing in on such issues as the development of gender-inclusive DDR programming for child soldiers and international frameworks for curbing human trafficking. During her Masters, she co-founded a charitable arm of the MGA program and served as the Second-Year Representative of the MGA Student Association. In the summer of 2011, she completed an internship at an NGO based in New Delhi, India, where she looked at the issue of female foeticide in rural Haryana, specifically focusing on the effectiveness of government policies in addressing this problem. Michelle has worked in both the federal and provincial government, plays a mean game of canasta and benefits from frequent reminders that she has a tendency to speak at a speed that is often incomprehensible.
Ashley Teo, Business Development Coordinator
Ashley is entering her final year of undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto with a double major in Economics and Psychology. She spent the summer of 2012 working in Tanzania to design and implement a microfinance program focused on in-kind loans for the Director of the Office of Global Health at Queen’s University Medical School. There, she also aided in the development of a series of income generating projects that provide supplemental income for local female entrepreneurs and Maasai mamas through the production and sale of handcrafted yoga bags and traditional Maasai jewellery. Ashley has previously served as a delegate to the United Nations for the Government of Canada advocating for critical issues pertaining to children’s’ rights. She is currently a member of the National Young Adult Leadership Team of Canada where she works closely with the federal government as an advisor on public health and youth. Ashley hopes to incorporate her love for business and technology with her deep passion for social justice and global health in her future ventures.
Anuja Sinha, Program Coordinator
Having grown up with an entrepreneurial father, Anuja has been surrounded by the business world from a very young age. Learning from her father and those around her, Anuja developed a passion for business, entrepreneurship and social issues that she furthered in her secondary education. Anuja’s passion for sustainable business development blossomed as she began working with Free the Children and eventually traveled to Kenya with Free the Children’s Me to We program. Here she built a library for local schools, and taught women about sustainable business development practices such as micro lending. Continuing to further her passion for business and entrepreneurship, Anuja began studying at Western University’s Richard Ivey Business School, for which she received the prestigious Advanced Entry Opportunity status. In 2012, Anuja worked as Indo-Canadian Ottawa Business Chamber’s Chief Coordinator for Youth Events and Affairs. This dynamic position has allowed Anuja to meet local entrepreneurs and gain experience regarding program coordination.
